Born on the 18th of December 1961 in New York’s Lower East Side, Jose Garcia Jr. was exposed to many different cultures with various music and dancing styles. His cousins were passionate about listening to records, as well as playing instruments. By age five, he was introduced to Boogaloo, Salsa, Soul, Funk, Jazz and Rock. His older sister Mickey took him for the first time to a dance club at the age of twelve. With no experience in dancing the hustle, the hottest dance style at that time, Jose sat down and watched the crowd. He became more and more curious about the afro-headed cat controlling the moves of the people from his booth. Curiosity grew into fascination. The very next day, he put together two record players at home and attemped to imitate the DJ of the club, experimenting with a couple of records he had.
It was love at first mix!

Jose has been influenced by DJs like Gypsy from Starship Discovery One, Walter Gibbons from the original 12 West, Nicky Siano from Studio 54 and his single biggest inspiration, Larry Levan from the Paradise Garage. These DJs made mixing an art form, making records “talk to each other”.  Jose was blown away by their ability to create an atmosphere and, as it is ever referred to since, take you on a journey. They would build the crowd up to the point where they began screaming on the dance floor. Larry Levan, playing a wide range of music, made dancers reach for the sky! He played it all, from the Rolling Stones to Nina Hagen. Larry constantly challenged his audience to be open and receptive of music, regardless of genre, forever affecting the way Jose looks at music.

Jose began DJing in 1978. He started playing the Disco, Soul and Funk of the time. Today, he selects the music that moves his spirit. Not following any fixed system, his sets are eclectic, keeping the music interesting and surprising. Jose plays everything from jazzy soulful House, classic R-n-B, Garage, Minimal Tech to banging Techno. He currently spins on two Technics SL-1210MK2 turntables, a Denon 9000 Dual CD player, with a Vestax PMC26 knob Mixer, and a QSC 2000 Power Amplifier. On top of playing vinyl, CDs, and MP3s, he’s learning software in order to edit music according to his own vision.

Jose has played at NYC venues as Avenue C Garage, Chap-N-Rusty, Espresso Bar, Limelight, Two Eyes, Bang The Party, Da Spot, S.O.S. Studios, Cheetah, Halcyon, Glass and The Cage.
